11 april 2023- We gaan er nogal gemakkelijk vanuit dat de lidstaten van de Europese Unie in West-Europa als liberaal-democratisch kunnen bestempeld worden, terwijl die van Oost-Europa, de nieuw bijgekomen lidstaten, weinig respect hebben voor de rechtsstaat, en in grote of mindere mate âonliberaalâ zijn. Ze zouden nog veel te leren hebben van âonze westerse democratieĂ«nâ op het gebied van parlementaire democratie en mensenrechten. Een hoop ontwikkelingen doen echter de vraag rijzen of West-Europa op dat gebied niet toegroeit naar Oost-Europa, eerder dan omgekeerd.
Aan Polen en Hongarije wordt (terecht) verweten dat niet een verkozen parlement maar de regering het beleid bepaalt. Nochtans is wat Macron recent uithaalde om zijn pensioenhervorming erdoor te drukken door het parlement buitenspel te zetten van identiek hetzelfde allooi. Misschien minder spectaculair, maar even betekenisvol, is wat zich in het paasweekend voordeed aan de Hamburgse universiteit.
Daar had de studentenvereniging (AStA) een congres gepland onder de titel âWe want our World backâ, het vierde congres in de reeks âChallenging Capitalist Modernityâ. Er werden 1300 gasten verwacht, waaronder vooraanstaande wetenschappers en activisten. Maar begin april trok de academische overheid de toelating voor het gebruik van de gebouwen in, nadat ze een brief had ontvangen van de binnenlandse veiligheidsdienst, het BĂŒro fĂŒr Verfassungsschutz (BfV) Hamburg. Dit waarschuwde voor âpolitiek extremismeâ waarvan het congres het toneel kon zijn. Volgens het BfV zou er aan het congres deelgenomen worden door âgroepen die dicht staan bij de PKKâ, de âArbeiderspartij van Koerdistanâ die op de terreurlijst van de EU staat. Hoe âterroristischâ dit congres geaard was kan de lezer zelf nagaan op de lijst van sprekersâŠ
Het congres kon toch doorgaan door de gastvrijheid van het nabijgelegen BĂŒrgerhaus Wilhelmsburg, dat plaats biedt voor interculturele ontmoetingen. Op een mum van tijd tekende een hele reeks professoren en prominenten een protestmotie. (hm)
